Introduction to several commonly used grinding wheel abrasives

May 19, 2023

1. Chrome corundum: The hardness of chrome corundum is similar to that of white corundum, but its toughness is better (between brown corundum and white corundum), so the durability and grinding efficiency of the grinding wheel are higher than that of white corundum. At the same time, the contour of the abrasive grain cutting edge on the surface of the grinding wheel can be maintained for a long time after dressing (that is, the abrasive grain cutting edge is on the same circumferential surface end plane), so under the same conditions. The surface finish of workpieces ground with chrome corundum grinding wheels is slightly higher than that of white corundum grinding wheels. Due to the above characteristics, chrome corundum is suitable for grinding various hardened high-strength steels and measuring tools and instrument parts with high smoothness requirements. Suitable for profile grinding and sharpening tools. The price of chrome corundum is relatively high, so it is only suitable for fine grinding.
2. Single crystal corundum (GD) and microcrystalline corundum (GW): Single crystal corundum has high hardness and toughness, and is good at resisting breakage during grinding. It is used for grinding stainless steel and high-temperature high-speed steel with high toughness. The effect is better for steel with high hardness. Microcrystalline corundum has high strength, good toughness, and better self-sharpening than single crystal corundum, which is suitable for grinding stainless steel. Bearing steel and special ductile iron, etc., can also be used for high-gloss grinding.
3. Black silicon carbide: The color of this abrasive is black or dark blue, and the vitrified bond grinding wheel made with it is also black. The hardness of black silicon carbide is higher than that of any corundum abrasive. The abrasive grains have sharp water chestnuts, but their toughness is low and fragile, and they cannot withstand the cutting pressure of materials with high toughness. Therefore, they are suitable for grinding materials with low tensile strength or soft materials. Material.
4. Green silicon carbide: the color is green, and the vitrified bond grinding wheel made of it is also green. Green silicon carbide has the same hardness as black silicon carbide, but is more brittle and is mainly used for grinding cemented carbide. Brittle materials such as optical glass.
5. Diamond: The hardness is higher than other kinds of abrasives. It is the hardest material among the known substances. It has excellent cutting performance, but the price is expensive. It is mainly used for processing high-hardness materials that are difficult to process with other abrasives. The grinding wheel made of this kind of abrasive is called diamond grinding wheel, which has many different characteristics from the grinding wheel made of corundum and silicon carbide abrasives.
