Understand the damage of several common grinding wheels

May 05, 2023

The main function of the grinding wheel is to modify the surface shape and precision of the workpiece, usually grinding. Because of the damage of the grinding wheel itself, it constantly affects the state of the grinding wheel table. With the increase of cutting time, the drilling ability of the grinding wheel is poor, so that the grinding process cannot continue. The following will show you the damage of several common types of grinding wheels:
1. Abrasion damage: When the abrasive particles are obviously damaged, after a serious damage plan appears on the top of the abrasive particles, the damaged area of the cutting edge is enlarged, the friction is aggravated, and the cutting edge cannot enter the surface of the workpiece. However, the strength of the grinding wheel is high, so that the grinding particles cannot be crushed and dropped in time. This type of damage generally occurs under the premise that the abrasive particle strength is slightly low, the grinding wheel strength is high, the abrasive particle size distribution is too fine, and the material strength of the product workpiece is relatively high.
2. Oxidation wear: The more common wear-resistant materials are metal oxides, cementite and nitrogen compounds. Metal oxide wear-resistant materials are stable in the air, and the surface of other wear-resistant materials will be oxidized at high temperatures.
3. Plastic damage: Under the continuous high temperature of cutting, the frosted particles will be damaged due to plastic deformation. Plastic damage depends entirely on the thermal strength of the raw material of the product workpiece. During cutting, if the thermal intensity of the cutting of the grinding wheel in the rake face of the abrasive particles exceeds the thermal intensity of the contact area of the abrasive particles, the abrasive particles will be plastically damaged.
4. Spread damage: It refers to the damage caused by the mutual diffusion of the elements of the diamond grinding wheel and the weakening of the surface of the abrasive particles when the abrasive particles and the raw material to be ground are in contact at high temperature. The interdiffusion of elements between the two raw materials is closely related to the composition of the raw materials. Because the ability of carbon elements to spread and dissolve in iron in diamond wear-resistant materials exceeds the ability of elements to spread and dissolve in iron in boron carbide wear-resistant materials, diamond grinding wheels are not suitable. Cutting steel.
5. Internal stress damage: In the cutting process, the working surface of the abrasive particles rises to a continuous high temperature in an instant, and the grinding wheel is still chilled under the action of the grinding fluid. The surface of the sand produces very large alternating internal stress, which makes the surface of the frosted particles crack and pulverize. The order of thermal conductivity of various wear-resistant materials is diamond, boron nitride, silicon nitride, corundum.
